Before an audience that filled both levels of the McEvoy auditorium at the Cortlandville Campus, OCM BOCES inducted 106 students into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) on April 18. The honor represents hard work, character, and academic success in a variety of programs that teach specialized, hands-on skills to prepare them for college or careers.

The “Shave Dave” project at Innovation Tech culminated on April 14 with a great sense of pride about how much the school had raised — $1,021 — to support long-time Facilitator Dave Sampson and his annual effort to fight childhood cancer through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

OCM BOCES inducted 189 students today into the National Technical Honor Society, or NTHS, an honor that represents their hard work, character and academic success in a variety of programs that teach specialized, hands-on skills to prepare them for college or careers.
To qualify, students must have an 85 grade-point average or higher, 12 or fewer absences, and a teacher recommendation. Students must also demonstrate attributes that include respect, honesty, skill, responsibility, leadership, service and citizenship.

Dave Sampson’s hair has power — and a small army behind it.
Sampson is a teacher at Innovation Tech, a high school in Syracuse administered through OCM BOCES. The army is his entire school, with about 120 students and staff who want to raise money for the popular teacher and his annual “Shave Dave” effort to fight childhood cancer through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
In Syracuse, the fundraiser culminates at Kitty Hoyne’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in Armory Square. In exchange for donations, participants agree to get their heads shaved in front of a large and boisterous crowd. This year, the hair-shaving hoopla is set for Sunday, April 2. Sampson has ...

Riley Collier makes history for OCM BOCES with SkillsUSA bronze at national championships
Riley Collier mentally shakes his head when he thinks about two years ago, when he had no idea SkillsUSA existed.
Today, his third-place finish in the national SkillsUSA competition has transformed his life. It put OCM BOCES on the map. No student in the 74-year history of OCM BOCES has landed among the top three winners at nationals, where state SkillsUSA champions compete against all the other state champions from 50 states plus the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Students are tested on their skills and knowledge related to more than 100 trades and service occupations.

OCM BOCES had great representation on Oct. 27, 2022, at Syracuse's "Construction Careers Day" at Driver's Village.
Students and staff from our OCM BOCES Adult Education, Innovation Tech and Career & Technical Education programs tried their hands at operating heavy equipment, laying bricks, learning about electrical equipment, practicing with a welding simulator, talking to numerous potential employers, and more. Every student donned a free hard hat and fluorescent-orange bag to get them into the spirit of the event.

As they banter about homework, graduation, senior balls and the niggling apprehension they feel about leaving for college, it’s easy to see that seniors in the OCM BOCES New Vision Engineering Professions program at Lockheed Martin have formed a special bond.
They meet up after school, despite living in separate school districts. They laugh about their “inside jokes.” They agree that working in groups throughout the school year was never a problem because they felt comfortable with everyone in the room.

OCM BOCES had an outstanding showing at the New York State SkillsUSA competition held April 28 at the New York State Fairgrounds. We had two state champions and four additional students among the top-three finishers.
The two state champions, Riley Collier and Matthew Sheffield, will now compete at the national competition set for June 20-24 in Atlanta. We wish them the best of luck! Congratulations to all of our competitors.

Students who excel in several Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs at the OCM BOCES Thompson Road Campus were honored May 24 in the annual "Tools for Success" awards ceremony.
The event was held in person for the first time in two years, allowing students, teachers, family members, school administrators, Board of Education members and other guests to celebrate the achievements of these students. Seniors in the New Vision Criminal Justice program at OCM BOCES recently finished a special project that culminated during Teacher Appreciation Week.
Instructor Charlie Wilson and teaching assistant Denise Mecca tasked their students with identifying a favorite teacher or counselor, formulating questions, interviewing them, describing their backgrounds, and writing them a letter of gratitude for making a positive difference in their lives. Students mailed their letters to the teachers this week with a special thank you card tucked inside the envelope.
