Three OCM BOCES programs participate in Syracuse's "Construction Careers Day"
OCM BOCES had great representation on Oct. 27, 2022, at Syracuse's "Construction Careers Day" at Driver's Village.Students and staff from our OCM BOCES Adult Education, Innovation Tech and Career & Technical Education programs tried their hands at operating heavy equipment, laying bricks, learning about electrical equipment, practicing with a welding simulator, talking to numerous potential employers, and more. Every student donned a free hard hat and fluorescent-orange bag to get them into the spirit of the event.
Adult Education Coordinator Matthew Tarolli set up a special booth for OCM BOCES with instructors and students from the school's electrical, welding, HVAC/R and construction programs to share their expertise and offer hands-on activities with high school students from across the region.
"Construction Career Day" coincided with President Joe Biden's historic trip to Syracuse to talk about Micron computer-tech technology at Onondaga Community College. Participants at the event agreed: The day represented the kind of student interest and engagement in construction careers that will help Central New York make the most of Micron's $100 billion investment in our community.
One Adult Education electrical student, Elijah Teeter of Cortland, said he loves the electrical program and hopes to work for Micron microchip someday. "That's the hope," he said. "We can only hope."
