The reason was simple, Melvin explained: “He looked like me.”        Melvin discussed the importance of role models during his keynote speech this week at the OnCenter in Syracuse, where more than 250 educators from across the country are gathering for four-day conference sponsored by the Onondaga-Cortland-Madison Board of Cooperative Educational Services (OCM BOCES) in conjunction with the nationally acclaimed ...

Another poured love on the entire family, not just Andrew, when he needed frequent care in his home. A third stayed with Valkema at the time of her husband’s death, giving her strength and calling family and friends in the pre-dawn hours.      On Thursday, July 21, Valkema recalled these stories as she stood on stage at Gillette Road Middle School in North Syracuse. Reaching Out - BOCES Helps Cuban Doctors Reaching Out - BOCES Helps Cuban Doctors: When it comes to community outreach, OCM BOCES is always willing to help. In fact, it is part of our mission. Recently, OCM BOCES assisted a pair of Cuban physicians through a local community organization called Partners in Learning. Partners in Learning supports adults, children and families of diverse cultures and languages in their efforts to learn, earn and live well in Syracuse and Onondaga County. In the case of the Cuban doctors, OCM BOCES helped them enroll in phlebotomy classes because much of their paperwork had been left behind in Cuba, a situation that is forcing them to get re-training here in the United States. For more information about community partnerships, please give us a call at 315-453-4455.
