Recipe for Success: Culinary Students + Cornell Recipe for Success: Culinary Students + Cornell: OCM BOCES + Cornell University Dining = A Recipe for Success For the second year in a row, four representatives from Cornell Dining traveled to OCM BOCES' McEvoy Campus in Cortland to take part in a continuing partnership with Chef Lori Rossi's Culinary Arts class. The result: a culinary masterpiece of fresh pasta and chicken parmesan, as well as fresh oven-roasted tomato sauce and cello basil leaves as a garnish. "Chit Chat Train" project promotes positive interaction: It was full-steam ahead for OCM BOCES students at our Crown Road campus, where teachers and staff in our Stellatta and K-8 special education programs recently piloted a social communication project, called the "Chit Chat Train," to encourage students to display positive and appropriate interactions with their peers. For four weeks, students earned paper train cars for using appropriate nonverbal gestures and social greetings, as well as for asking/answering each other's questions and making appropriate comments during peer interactions. Culinary students at McEvoy present a grand feast Culinary students at McEvoy present a grand feast: Fantastico Dinner: Students in the McEvoy Campus Culinary Arts program recently hosted a dinner for the Cortland and Madison Boards of Education. Members were greeted by the culinary students of Chef Lori Rossi’s class with strawberry lemonade, spinach-artichoke crostini, and crispy panko-parmesan tortellini. A classic variety of Italian music played in the background while members were served a salad of fresh mozzarella, arugula and cherry tomato. The molto bene main course featured chicken saltimbocca, roasted garlic mashed potatoes and “Action Stations” where the culinary students showed off their saute skills with pasta, vegetables, shrimp and a variety of homemade sauces. Connect:NY, is WCNY’s statewide TV news and public affairs series, which continues to convene conversations that matter to all citizens of New York State.  Erin McCormack, Executive Producer of WCNY, took the time to walk students through all phases of the production. She discussed the nuances associated with producing a news show of this magnitude. Disabilities Mentoring Day Disabilities Mentoring Day: Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) is an international event held on the third Wednesday of October, which is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. DMD’s focus is promoting career exploration for students and making employers aware of available qualified candidates. Students went to work sites for about 2 hours in the morning before returning to McEvoy for lunch, energizing activities and a presentation from guest speaker Geoff “Deaf Geoff” Herbert from Syracuse.com. Cathy always loved everything about her small town life and appreciates the fact that she grew up living at a slower pace than most people.   As a child, Cathy had opportunities right within her neighborhood to ride bikes and play ball and hang out with her friends. McEvoy Auto Students Refurbish Zoo Train McEvoy Auto Students Refurbish Zoo Train: All aboard for community servic e: Auto collision students at our McEvoy Campus played a key role last year in refurbishing a kiddie train for the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park that was finally revealed in mid-September. Students in Dale Gendron’s class took a rusty, dented industrial train that was purchased by the zoo online and worked on it for months so the zoo could use it as a new attraction. Toby Rice, the zoo’s marketing and special events coordinator, said the zoo pursued the project because patrons fondly remembered a train ride from decades past and thought it might be nice to bring it back.   Students sanded cars, filled in scratches, and primed, painted and clear-coated the panels. Called Seven Valleys New Tech Academy, this cutting edge high school at 240 Watson St. in Cortland celebrated its GRAND OPENING and ribbon cutting this morning (9/12) with more than 60 guests that included local and state lawmakers, local school superintendents and administrators, guidance counselors, students, teachers, OCM BOCES trainers, local business leaders, parents and more. The school opened this year with 43 students and eight staff members. Seven Valleys embodies a national New Tech movement that now includes 128 high schools in more than 25 states across the country.
