Research & the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS)
Deepening Understanding

Students analyze sources through close reading to deepen their understanding and draw personal conclusions about their Area of Investigation. By the end of this, students will have a series of evidence-based claims addressing each Inquiry Path of their Research Frame.

General Resources

Deepening Understanding

Students analyze key sources to deepen their understanding and answer their inquiry questions.

Student Material

These are ODELL EDUCATION's materials for students as they move through the Gathering Information phase of the research process.

Teacher Material

These are ODELL EDUCATION's materials for teachers as they help students move through the Gathering Information phase of the research process.

Selecting Key Sources

The teacher discusses how to identify the most relevant sources and helps students select key sources to analyze through close reading.

Students can use the information they recorded on their Potential Sources tool, as well as the information provided to them on the Assessing Sources hand-out, to select key sources.

Reading Sources Closely

Students use their Inquiry Questions to read key sources closely, analyzing them for content, perspective and relevance.

The Forming EBC tool and hand-out help students to effectively use an Inquiry Question to guide their reading, mark details that help them answer this question and make a claim.

Discussing Types of Claims

The teacher explains, models and works with students on making various types of evidence-based claims using student research.

The EBC Criteria Checklist asks students to assess their evidence-based claim for content, evidence, organization and use of language.

Writing Evidence-Based Claims about Sources

Students develop evidence-based summaries and evaluations/interpretations/criticisms of relevant sources using their notes and annotations.

The Writing EBC and Connecting Ideas Handouts support instruction on writing evidence-based claims for different Inquiry Questions.

The Research Criteria Matrix outlines the key proficiencies and habits of the research process that students need to build. It is a tool that can be used to evaluate student performance. Student products can be examined for ability to set the direction for their research, pose inquiry questions and build a research base.
