It's tax season, and Adult Education students are here to help
Students in Susan Carges’ Office Technology classes in Adult Education are volunteering their time this year to do individual tax returns through PEACE Inc., in Syracuse. Students earned their certifications through the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which supports free tax preparation services for the underserved.PEACE Inc. provides this service year-round for any individual with income under $64,000 a year.At one recent event at Beauchamp Library in Syracuse, volunteers completed more than 40 tax returns and filed refunds totaling $70,000. Recipients also benefited from child tax credits and earned income credits.
“It is a fabulous program,” Carges said. “My students will give about 200 hours total between myself and others.”
