Thompson Road CTE Welding Technology students forge relationship—and metal—with local business
Representatives from Schilling Forge Inc. visited the OCM BOCES Thompson Road Welding Technology program to thank students for completing a four-month-long project at their request and continuing a mutually beneficial relationship.
Earlier this year, students were given blueprints to create two kneeling plates that Schilling will use to forge custom-ordered tools inside a furnace.
Schilling Forge Manufacturing Engineer Allen Smith joined Jason Martin, the company’s general manager, to thank the students. They also gave them breakfast from Dunkin’ and company hats.
“Building these relationships is key,” said Martin. “Keeping this relationship with BOCES going for us, we’re happy to provide our community with some steel and welding rods to help you all learn.”
Welding Technology Instructor Duane Debejian said the project provided learning for both students and recent Schilling Forge employees who helped revise project details along the way.
“I really think this was a huge learning experience for us,” he said. ”There were some ups and downs, but that’s what we took and we thank you for that.”
Thompson Road Interim Principal Phil Grome said OCM BOCES appreciates the partnership and the opportunity it provided for students.
“We strive for authenticity here, and this is as authentic as it gets.”
