New Pre-Apprenticeship Program Launched to Equip Future Ironworkers
August 12, 2024A new pre-apprenticeship program for aspiring welders is underway at OCM BOCES through a collaborative effort with CenterState CEO and Ironworkers Local 60. The initiative will equip 10 students with essential skills and certifications required for a career with the union.
The program spans six weeks, with students attending classes Monday through Thursday. Over the course of 140 hours, participants will gain hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge crucial for their future roles in the industry.
In addition to acquiring fundamental welding skills, the students will be eligible to obtain several important certifications. These include the MEWP (mobile elevated work platform) and PIT (powered industrial trucks) certifications, OHSA, First Aid and CPR. Students will be eligible to sit for the AWS (American Welding Society) D1.1 exam.
The curriculum, designed by OCM BOCES instructors in response to a funding opportunity presented by CenterState CEO in mid-June, focuses primarily on stick welding. This hands-on training is tailored to meet the specific needs of the Ironworkers Local 60 and aligns with the skills they seek in new apprentices.
