The Alternative to Homebound Program was established in 2006 at the request of several participating districts looking for an alternative to long-term out-of-school suspension. This program provides classroom instruction to students in a small setting with a teacher to student ratio of no more than 6:1. Classroom instruction is offered in the four core content areas and includes science labs in Earth Science and Living Environment, along with PE and Spanish. Support is provided by a social worker, school monitor and a special education teacher. It is recommended that districts place students in the program for a minimum of five weeks and student departure from the program should coincide with the end of a marking period or semester.
