Early Childhood Education

Program Description

The Early Childhood Education program is offered to students who want to pursue a career working with young children.  Students learn about the characteristics, needs, and behaviors of three- and four-year olds.  Students learn how to guide and teach them in a nursery school setting.  Once students have successfully completed the core curriculum, they may participate in the preschool phase of the program, which involves the operation of a nursery school for 12-16 children three days per week.  Each high school student in the program is expected to participate in all phases of running the nursery school.  Students are responsible for planning, preparation, and presentation of activities for the young children essentially functioning as student teachers under the supervision of a certified teacher.  On Fridays, students plan and prepare activities for the following week and study child development through lectures, discussions, observations, videos, speakers, and occasional field trips.  Applied math and science courses are offered throughout the program.
