Cortland Alternative School
250 Port Watson St.
Cortland, NY  13045

The Cortland Alternative School is beginning its 27th year and has graduated over 232 students.  These students all came to CAS in need of a new and different learning environment.  Here they found success and future direction.

Students in grades 7-8 experience a small group setting with an emphasis on integrated, thematic units and a project-based focus.  English, social studies and science are intertwined in the design of the learning experiences.  Math and Spanish classes occur in the afternoon.  Students also participate in family group, focusing on team-building, problem-solving and collaboration.

Students in grades 9-12 are placed into small family groups that meet weekly to focus on team building, problem-solving, and building self-esteem.  In addition, each student meets regularly with his or her family group leader to work on individual goals and monitor progress in the program.  Rigorous academics are stressed through learning opportunities that incorporate problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills.  The goal of the program is to produce college and career ready high school graduates who will become productive, contributing members of their communities.
