Environmental Science Summer Programs
coordinated by the OCM BOCES Science Center with OCM BOCES member School Districts |
- Intensive and unique 5 - day environmental education programs.
- Designed to provide opportunities for district students in grades 10 - 12.
- Each of two programs available deal with a specific ecological system:
- aquatic and terrestrial habitats in the Adirondacks.
- marine habitats on Long island.
The Science Center coordinates the program and transportation to the locations. |

Adirondack Program

| Students will conduct individual and group research projects to investigate such questions as the effect of acid rain on various organisms and ecosystems, the effects of man on natural environments or the effect of climate on specific populations. Each problem will be studied in a variety of habitats including the bog, lake, pond, woods, stream, meadow, and mountain. |
| The uniqueness of this program lies in the partnership it represents between practicing researchers in aquatic and terrestrial ecology and secondary educators on the field of science. Students will be guided by a team of instructors from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and local high school teachers with a strong interest in ecology. Students will have access to both the equipment and the personnel at the Biological Research Station at Cranberry Lake, giving them real insight as to how environmental research is actually carried out. Students will be housed at the Biological Station. |

Marine Studies

| This program will serve to supplement and enhance concepts learned in the classroom with on-site interpretations and experimentation. This residential experience on eastern Long Island provides students with expansive discussions, lectures and demonstrations. |
| Through daily field excursions, laboratory and field excercises, movies and slide presentations, students will develop a better understanding of ecological concepts. Students will investigate and study: physical and chemical oceanography, marine ecology, animal behavior, invertebrate zoology, marine fish, algae, seaside plants, birds, mariculture, man's impact on the marine environment and wetland conservation. |
| The program is staffed by a teaching marine biologist who works in conjunction with participating school district teaching professional staff. |
