Resource Files Web Site: Reptile Adaptations Activity:
Adaptations are responses to external pressures on a group of organisms. (Science/ELA extension)
Web Site: Amazing Animal Senses (Neuroscience for Kids) This is a list of exceptional senses that different animals have developed.
Graphic (PNG) - Sexing Crayfish (png files will view ina browser - Chrome, Safari, IE)
Animal Responses - Animal Behavior Phenomenon of Starling Murmuration (flock behavior) - awesome flock behavior which seems to correlate with the presence of predator(s) such a falcons. The movement appears to be a flock response to one members change in direction - obviously much more complex than mere mortals can perceive.( All About Birds - Starling Murmurations)
Critters: All three critters in this kit are invertebrates (no backbones) and, in fact, have no bones at all. They all have exoskeletons and belong to the group of animals called "Arthropods". Arthropods are invertebrates with exoskeletons, jointed bodies and segmented "legs". Within this group or phylum the crayfish and brine shrimp belong to the subgroup called "Crustacea" and the mealworm (Darkling Beetle) belongs to the subgroup called "Insecta".
Responses: A response are reactions to a stimulus. Living things detect a stimulus using their senses. There are different types of responses that an organism can have. An organism can have behavioral responses and/or physical responses. Organism species can have longer term adaptative responses.
Behavioral responses - run away, growl, hide, climb a tree, lay down, seek shade, seek sun
Video, National Geographic these videos capture behaviors of animals, many of them being conflicts (responses) between animals. There is even a category for invertebrates such as, Crabs, Lobsters, and Shrimp. Downside - you will have to endure a 20 -30 sec. commercial before each video.
Professional Development(PD) You Tube: Food Webs and Energy Pyramids - Bedrocks of Biodiversity - Explore food chains, food webs, energy pyramids, and the power of biodiversity in this ecology video by the Amoeba Sisters! This video also introduces general vocabulary for the unit of ecology. (Amoeba Sisters)
PD Multimedia Learn360: Ecosystems [30:00] - a good overview/background information for the teacher, 5 video segments (we would suggest that if you share this video with your students you do so a selected section at a time)
The pond model that is created in the provided aquarium is one that can be discussed and formed as the students move through the unit. We do not provide "directions" as it is open-ended and a considered a class project.
