Under 21 Years Old?

So you've left school and you are under 21?

  • Our first recommendation is for you to return to school if at all possible. However, we recognize that in some cases this would not be a possible or best choice. In those cases, after you have consulted with your guidance counselor, we would recommend one of the following programs. We suggest that a call to the Cortland City Youth Bureau (607-753-3021) should be your very first step after seeing your guidance counselor. The Youth Bureau staff can explain to you all of the services that they have for out-of-school youth (much more than GED preparations!). They can also give you an Official GED Practice Test so that you know what the G.E.D. test is like and whether or not you are ready to tackle it. They can also get you started in classes or refer you back to us.
  • The Cortland YOUTH BUREAU holds classes from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Burch Building at Suggett Park two evenings each week during the school year. For their schedule, call 607-753-3021. We strongly recommend that you get in touch with them to learn about all of their services and to make your first inquiry about G.E.D. possibilities.
  • If you are referred by the Youth Bureau to us for adult classes, you are welcome to enroll for the Adult Academic Classes.
  • G.E.D. Preparation is Free of charge to you. However your school district will be asked to pay a fee for our services (at BOCES or the Youth Bureau), so it is important that you DO contact the guidance department at your high school to let them know what your plans are.
  • We are happy to be of service to you AFTER you have determined, with the help of counselors, that an out-of-school GED program is the best possible option for you. For more information, call the Youth Bureau at 753-3021 or call the Center for New Careers at 758-1111, or e-mail Sylvia Mace.
