Math Anxiety?

Small, individualized classes are available mornings, afternoons, and evenings. This means you will be working individually with a teacher, or in a small group. You will work on what YOU need to work on, depending on which choice you have made (GED or EDP) and which skills you particularly need. It's not the same as the classes you went to when you were a kid!

Why you still need to get your High School diploma

Academic Classes for Adults

  • Prepare to qualify for the External Diploma Program (to earn a regular High School Diploma)
  • Prepare for the G.E.D. test (for a High School Equivalency Diploma)
  • Boost your skills to prepare for job training programs

You can work

  • Only on the skills YOU need
  • At your own pace
  • With individualized help from the teacher

Classes are FREE and available as follows:

Mornings: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9:00 am - 12:00 noon
Afternoons: Tuesday and Thursday 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Evenings: Tuesday and Thursday 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Location: Cortland Works Career Center
Local GED Testing Center
Schedule at: Center for New Careers

GRASP Home Study Program

GRASP stands for "Give Rural Adults a Study Program." It is a home study program, like a correspondence course. You drop off your completed work and pick up new work every two weeks. You work on the skills YOU need. You can also get help on the phone if you're stuck!

You can use this program to prepare for the G.E.D. test. You can also use it to improve your skills to qualify for the EDP program. To enroll, you need to be 21 years old, and 9th grade reading scores are required. If you choose GRASP, be sure you set aside some time and space at home to do your school work!

If you need additional help, you can call and speak with a home study instructor or drop in on one of our academic classes to ask for individual assistance.

Nearly half of our G.E.D. graduates each year have used the home study as part of their program.

In addition to academic skills, study packets are available for life skills topics such as Parent Power, Spending Power, Health, Relationships, Communication, and Balancing Roles in Your Life.

To enroll in home study, simply attend an information session any Wednesday at 1:00 or 6:30 pm, and you will receive your first home study assignment before you leave the session. For more information, call (607)758-1111, extension 2237.

Official GED Practice Test

A terrific way to get a realistic awareness of the nature of the GED test and your readiness to pass it, the Official Practice Test is also given three times a year. Call for current schedule.

The Actual G.E.D. Test

If you choose this method, you will spend a Friday night and Saturday morning taking five multiple choice tests, and writing an essay. The tests are primarily checking how well you read, and how you think about things you read. Even the math test is primarily a reading test! If you pass the tests, you will receive a High School Equivalency Diploma. The State Education Department will mail it to you from Albany.
